Lives Of The Saints

Ss Eustace and His Companions
The legend of Eustace is famous and moving, but its historical footing is uncertain, so it is best received as a cherished Christian tale rather than a secure early martyr life.

Brief life
The legend of Eustace is vivid and memorable. Placidas, the pagan officer, sees Christ between the stag’s antlers, is baptized with his wife and sons, loses wealth and rank, is separated from his family through a chain of calamities, is eventually reunited with them, and at last suffers martyrdom together with them. As a Christian tale of providence, suffering, and constancy, it has great imaginative force. The difficulty is historical.
The cult is not early, the narrative was elaborated in romantic forms, and even the historical existence of the martyr must remain doubtful. That does not make the tradition worthless, but it does mean it must be read honestly. What survives most securely is not a firmly documented early passion, but a cherished story that taught generations of Christians how to think about trial, loss, reunion, and perseverance under suffering.
Historical note
The famous legend of St Eustace is widespread, but even the historical existence of the martyr remains doubtful.
