The reading

ⓘ Butler source

Alban Butler, The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints, Volume X (October), Thomas Richardson and Son, Derby, for the Catholic Book Society, 1846; October 27, “St Abban, Abbot in Ireland,” pp. 646.

Abban received his religious formation in the monastery of Begerin, on the coast of Leinster. Butler identifies St. Ibar as his uncle and spiritual guide. The notice leaves open the disputed accounts of Ibar’s relationship to the mission of St. Patrick.

After Ibar’s death, Abban continued the work of preaching the Christian faith. Butler associates him with the foundations at Kilabban in northern Leinster and Magheranoidhe in the region of Kinselach. His remembrance belongs to the growth of monastic communities and Christian teaching in Ireland.

The short account places his death toward the end of the sixth century at Kilabban. It preserves the memory of a monk who carried into his own foundations the religious life in which he had been formed at Begerin.

Historical note

An original Novena Regina reading adapted and summarized from the cited 1846 edition of Alban Butler. This is not a transcription of Butler’s words.

This notice concerns the Abban associated with Magheranoidhe and Begerin. It does not settle disputed early Irish genealogy or the chronology of Ibar and Patrick.
