Lives Of The Saints
February 13
St Catherine dei Ricci
Catherine dei Ricci is one of the major mystic lives, but the extraordinary signs are not the final center. Her story keeps returning to prayer, patience, obedience, and love of Christ's Passion.

Brief life
Catherine dei Ricci grows from a frail and prayerful Dominican at Prato into a prioress remembered for wisdom, holiness, and striking mystical favors. The unusual features of her life are not hidden: long illness, visions, friendship with St Philip Neri, and especially the weekly Passion ecstasies in which she seemed to relive scene after scene of the Lord's suffering. Yet these things are never allowed to become the whole person.
The deeper line is plainer and stronger: obedience, patience, governance, and a life increasingly shaped by contemplation of Christ crucified. Because the testimony around the more extraordinary signs is treated carefully, she never turns into a spectacle. Catherine is a mystic whose unusual gifts only matter because they rest on a solid life of prayer and fidelity.
Historical note
This life uses St Catherine dei Ricci as Butler’s strongest full life on the date.
