St Cuthbert
Cuthbert stands as monk, missionary, hermit, and bishop. He is one of those saints whose holiness was both solitary and deeply pastoral.

Life of Saint Cuthbert, late twelfth-century manuscript illumination
Brief life
Cuthbert is one of the richest northern saints because his life holds together the hermit's longing for solitude and the bishop's responsibility for souls. His story begins among the hills with a shepherd boy whose imagination is first pierced by heavenly things, then moves into the monastery, the mission field, and the hard life of northern Christian labor. Cuthbert preaches in remote places, reconciles communities, heals, guides, and governs, yet he keeps returning inwardly toward prayer and silence. That is why the years on Farne matter so much.
They are not an escape from charity, but the deep well from which the later public work draws strength. When obedience recalls him from the hermitage to become bishop of Lindisfarne, he returns without resentment and serves with the same tenderness that had marked him before. The miracles and beloved northern stories remain, but the true center is simpler: a man whose austerity made him gentler, not harder.
Historical note
This life uses St Cuthbert because Butler gives him the strongest and fullest life on the date.
