Brief life

Epiphanius of Salamis united monastic austerity, wide learning, and fierce doctrinal zeal in one striking life. Formed by Scripture and ascetic discipline, he carried those habits with him when he became bishop in Cyprus. He was personally charitable and simple in manner, yet uncompromising when he believed the faith itself was under threat. That strength made him one of the most energetic opponents of heresy in the fourth century, and his writings show the sheer range of his reading and memory.

At the same time, he was not flawless. His zeal could outrun his prudence, and at times he judged too quickly. That weakness does not diminish him so much as make him more human. The essential picture remains that of a bishop who loved orthodoxy intensely, gave generously to the poor, and lived from prayer, study, and disciplined self-denial.
