Brief life

Fidelis of Sigmaringen has a life whose stages fit together with unusual force. He is first a lawyer of intelligence and integrity, then a Capuchin who turns away from worldly success toward poverty, preaching, and hard self-discipline. Both parts of the life remain visible. His mind and energy do not disappear when he becomes a friar; they are purified and redirected.

He preaches, labors among divided communities, lives austerely, and gives himself generously to the poor. That same zeal makes him vulnerable once religious conflict sharpens around him. He goes into danger knowing well that it may cost him his life, and when the end comes he refuses to betray the faith for safety. The portrait is direct because the man is direct: a servant of the Church whose action ripened into martyrdom.
