Lives Of The Saints

St Gabriel Possenti
Gabriel feels fresh because he stays human. His holiness grows less through public exploits than through the patient offering of a gifted young life in ordinary religious fidelity.

Saint Gabriel archangel
Brief life
Gabriel Possenti is compelling precisely because the road to holiness does not begin with anything strange or theatrical. Born Francis Possenti, he appears first as a bright, handsome, sociable young Italian who enjoyed company, dress, and ordinary pleasures, yet kept a real innocence of heart. Bereavements, illness, and repeated touches of grace slowly drove him toward a deeper seriousness, and at last he entered the Passionists as Brother Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows. The choice is never allowed to become mere romance.
Gabriel’s sanctity was built mostly in hidden things: obedience that did not pick and choose, cheerfulness under discipline, charity toward brothers, simplicity in prayer, and a steady surrender of self-will. He died of illness while still young, before any great public career had opened. That is exactly why the life stays with the reader. It shows how a beautiful life can become saintly without first becoming outwardly spectacular.
