St. John Leonardi

John Leonardi trained as a pharmacist, but Christ called him to bring a deeper medicine to souls. After becoming a priest, he taught the catechism, served the poor and sick, and gathered companions who shared his desire for Catholic renewal.

That small community became the Clerks Regular of the Mother of God. Opposition in Lucca forced John to persevere through years of suspicion and exile, yet he continued working for priestly holiness, sound Christian formation, and the spread of the faith. In Rome he was close to St. Philip Neri and helped lay foundations for the Church's organized missionary work.

John kept the crucified Christ at the center of every reform. In 1609 he contracted influenza while caring for people struck by an epidemic in Rome and died in their service. The former pharmacist spent his priesthood offering what he called the medicine of God: Jesus Christ.
