Lives Of The Saints

October 18

St Luke

St Luke is remembered as careful, intelligent, and trustworthy. His importance does not depend on legend, because the Church already received from him one Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles.

Brief life

Luke stands in the clear light of what can really be known. He is the beloved physician, companion of St Paul, author of one Gospel and of the Acts of the Apostles, and a Gentile Christian writing with particular care for Greek readers. This life stays close to Scripture because that is where Luke's greatness is already secure. He followed the apostolic mission at close hand, gave the Church an ordered account of Christ's life, and then extended that witness into the first age of preaching, travel, persecution, and growth.

Later traditions about his death, martyrdom, or painting portraits of Our Lady are treated with reserve, and this life is stronger for it. Luke does not need uncertain ornament. The Church already possesses from him a double gift of enormous weight.

Historical note

For October 18, this page uses St Luke as the strongest Butler-backed life on the date and stays cautious about later stories such as his martyrdom or his painting portraits of Our Lady.
