Mello is remembered as the first bishop of Rouen in Normandy. Butler says that he was believed to have come from Britain and that his zeal for the faith led him into the sacred ministry. The notice attributes the growth of his mission to the blessing of God.

Butler places his peaceful death near the beginning of the fourth century. He names Avitian, who attended the council of Arles in 314, as his immediate successor. The reported forty years of Mello’s episcopate belong to the tradition followed in this account.

When the Normans threatened the region, his relics were taken to Pontoise. Butler records their preservation in a collegiate church there, of which Mello was the titular saint and patron. That particular church is the scope of the patronage in the source.

Historical note

An original Novena Regina reading adapted and summarized from the cited 1846 edition of Alban Butler. This is not a transcription of Butler’s words.

The British origin and length of the episcopate are reported traditions in Butler. The source’s specific patronage of a collegiate church at Pontoise is not expanded into a patronage of the whole city.
