Lives Of The Saints

St Nilus of Rossano
Nilus stands out because his holiness is not flattened into a perfect beginning. He had to turn back, and then he became strong: prayerful, disciplined, intellectually serious, and bold enough to rebuke powerful men.

Brief life
This life is unusually frank that Nilus did not begin as an obvious saint. Bereavement and sickness recalled him to God, and from there he embraced the Byzantine monastic life of southern Italy with seriousness and perseverance. This life likes this because it gives the later holiness weight. Nilus becomes a learned and disciplined abbot, fearless in correction, compassionate toward the fallen, and respected by bishops and emperors alike.
He is not only a solitary or mystic figure. He founds, guides, admonishes, and shapes communities, and his last foundations lead toward Grottaferrata, where the Italo-Greek monastic tradition would endure close to Rome. This life quietly shows something larger too: holiness can draw East and West together without flattening either one.
Historical note
plainly notes that St Nilus did not begin as an exemplary ascetic, which makes his later conversion, discipline, and influence more striking rather than less.
