Brief life

Peter Claver gave his priesthood to people whom the slave trade treated as merchandise. Born in Catalonia and formed as a Jesuit, he was sent to Cartagena, the great slave port of New Granada. When ships arrived carrying enslaved Africans who were sick, terrified, and exhausted, Claver went aboard with food, medicine, linens, interpreters, catechisms, and sacred images. He understood that bodily suffering had to be relieved while the Gospel was being taught.

For decades he entered the crowded sheds, baptized the dying, instructed the newly arrived with patience, visited hospitals and plantations, and spent long hours in the confessional. He called himself the servant of enslaved Africans forever and lived the vow with exhausting constancy. His charity was not distant or sentimental. It accepted filth, disease, misunderstanding, and physical strain, sustained by prayer and penance. Claver remained near those whom society discarded and served Christ in them until his own body was spent.

Historical note

The account keeps the central line of Claver's long ministry: service to enslaved Africans, bodily and spiritual mercy, and apostolic endurance in Cartagena.
