ⓘ Butler source
Alban Butler, The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints, Volume V (May), Richardson and Son, Derby, for the Catholic Book Society, 1843; May 13, “St. Peter Regalati, C.,” p. 222.
Peter was born at Valladolid and lost his father in childhood. Still young, he obtained his mother's consent to enter the Franciscans. He sought a life of prayer and penance, and his fervour attracted the notice of the other friars.
He asked to join a community belonging to a stricter observance of the Franciscan life near Aguilera. Butler especially remembers his contemplation of the Passion of Our Lord. In time Peter succeeded the friar who had guided the reform, accepting responsibility for the communities whose way of life he had first desired to share.
He died at Aguilera on March 30, 1456. Benedict XIV canonized him in 1746. Butler distinguishes his death in March from the May 13 commemoration, which the edition connects with the translation of his relics. His life centres on the renewal of religious observance through prayer, example and faithful government.
Historical note
An original Novena Regina reading adapted and summarized from the cited pre-1962 source. This is not a transcription of Butler’s words.
Butler records May 13 as the commemoration associated with the translation of his relics, separately from his death on March 30.
