October 15

St Teresa of Avila

St Teresa of Avila is remembered as deeply prayerful and unmistakably practical. Her mystical life never made her vague; it made her braver, wiser, and more capable of building a real reform in the Church.

Brief life

Teresa of Avila is one of the clearest examples of a saint whose mystical life made her more practical, not less. Her years of interior struggle, conversion, prayer, friendships, writings, and visions did not carry her away from ordinary labor. They sent her back into it with greater courage. From the foundation of St Joseph at Avila to the wider Discalced reform, she had to travel, negotiate, govern, endure suspicion, and keep working through fatigue and resistance.

What makes her life so persuasive is that her mystical gifts never turn her vague or unreal. She is obedient, witty, shrewd, brave, and full of common sense. Prayer and action do not compete in her. They sharpen one another.

Historical note

This life emphasizes that Teresa’s mystical experiences never replaced prudence, obedience, and practical good judgment; they deepened them.
