Saint Of The Day
September 8
St. Adrian of Nicomedia
Also commemorated today: The Birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Adrian of Nicomedia was moved by the courage of Christian prisoners and chose to share their faith and their martyrdom. The received account remembers him as a Roman officer serving under the persecutors. When he saw Christians endure torture with steadfast hope, he asked what reward they expected from God, declared himself a Christian, and was imprisoned with them.
Adrian's wife Natalia was already a Christian. Far from shrinking from the danger, she came to strengthen him in prison and encouraged him to remain faithful when execution drew near. Adrian and his companions were put to death around the beginning of the fourth century, and Natalia continued to honor his witness. Their story gave Christian marriage a striking image of courage: husband and wife helping one another remain faithful to Christ when fidelity required everything.
The detailed acts were written as a martyr narrative rather than as a contemporary record, so their individual scenes cannot all be independently confirmed. Adrian's cult, however, was ancient and widespread, especially around the relics honored at Grammont in Belgium. He became a patron of soldiers and workers, while the Church kept the deeper memory of a convert strengthened toward martyrdom by his Christian wife.
