Lives Of The Saints
April 7
Bd Hermann Joseph
Hermann Joseph comes through as mystic, canon regular, and man of childlike devotion joined to real obedience. His life is tender in tone but serious in holiness.

The Vision of Blessed Hermann Joseph, Anthony van Dyck
Brief life
Hermann Joseph is one of the most tenderly remembered medieval mystics, but his tenderness never becomes sugary. From childhood he is associated with a trusting love for Our Lady and the Holy Child, yet the deeper note in the life is fidelity. Entering the Premonstratensians while still young, he learns obedience, hidden labor, and the discipline of common life. Mystical favors do not lift him out of ordinary duty; they are woven through it.
He serves in the refectory, tends the sacristy, repairs clocks, writes hymns, and bears poor health with patience. That combination explains his charm. Innocence in him does not mean unreality. It means a contemplative heart joined to useful, humble work.
