Brief life

Celestine I is remembered less through private detail than through public decision, and that suits the life he had to live. The Church of his age needed a governing pope who could see clearly, act promptly, and lend Roman authority where doctrinal confusion was spreading. Celestine answered that need.

He opposed Pelagianism, moved decisively against Nestorius, supported St Germanus in his struggle against false teaching, and helped prepare the way for the Council of Ephesus by sending strong Roman legates. The life also gives him wider pastoral range than a narrow controversy would suggest, not least in relation to the spread of Christianity in Ireland. He emerges as one of those popes whose sanctity is expressed through judgment, firmness, and timely action more than through personal anecdote.

Historical note

This life uses St Celestine I because Butler gives him the strongest and clearest substantial life on the date.
