The Commemoration of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is best understood not as a biography, but as a quiet piece of liturgical and devotional history. The Carmelite Order originally kept the Assumption as its principal Marian feast, but sometime in the later fourteenth century a distinct observance of Our Lady under the title of Mount Carmel began to emerge within the order, apparently first in England. It was linked to gratitude for the papal approbation of the Carmelite rule under Honorius III, and July 16 gradually became fixed as its date. Over time the feast also became closely associated with the tradition of Our Lady's appearance to St. Simon Stock and the gift of the scapular.

What matters is that these strands are related without being identical. In the proper Mass of the feast, neither the scapular nor Simon Stock's vision is mentioned directly; those associations appear instead in the lessons and other Carmelite devotional material. The feast itself honors the Mother of God under the Carmelite title of Mount Carmel, while the later scapular devotion grew around it with great strength and tenderness. That distinction keeps the observance ordered. The result is a Marian feast shaped less by spectacle than by gratitude, liturgical memory, and the enduring Carmelite confidence in Our Lady's protection.
