Sts. Abdon and Sennen

Sts. Abdon and Sennen are ancient martyrs honored by the Church of Rome. Tradition remembers them as Persian nobles who confessed Christ openly, cared for persecuted Christians, and reverently buried the bodies of martyrs. Brought to Rome as prisoners, they refused to sacrifice to pagan gods and accepted death rather than deny the faith.

Their traditional acts tell that wild beasts would not harm them and that they were finally slain by gladiators. The detailed account was written later, but their Roman veneration can be traced to the early centuries, and their names endured among the old witnesses of the martyrs.

Their feast honors two men who used rank and courage in service of the suffering Church. They remind us to care for the forgotten, honor those who suffer for Christ, and remain faithful when worldly power demands compromise.
