Ss. Saturninus and Sisinnius of Rome
Martyr, with St. Sisinnius
Saturninus and Sisinnius are Roman martyrs named in Butler’s November 29 notice. This Saturninus is distinct from the bishop and martyr of Toulouse.
The reading
ⓘ Butler source
Alban Butler, The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints, Volume XI (November), Thomas Richardson and Son, Derby, for the Catholic Book Society, 1846; November 29, “Another St Saturninus, Martyr, with St Sisinnius,” p. 546.
After the life of Saturninus of Toulouse, Butler adds a separate notice of another martyr of that name. This Saturninus suffered at Rome together with St. Sisinnius. The distinction prevents the two remembrances from being combined into a single life.
The short notice records their death for the Christian faith under Diocletian. It does not give an extended account of their arrest, occupations or examination, and this adaptation adds none.
Their burial is placed outside Rome on the road to Nomentum. Butler also records Saturninus in the Roman Martyrology for November 29. The remembrance here concerns the Roman martyrs, with their companion names and place kept distinct from the history of the Church of Toulouse.
Historical note
An original Novena Regina reading adapted and summarized from the cited pre-1962 sources. This is not a transcription of Butler’s words.
The source is the separate Roman-martyr notice within the November 29 entry. The episcopate and missionary work of Saturninus of Toulouse are not transferred to these martyrs.
