Lives Of The Saints
October 22
St Abercius
Abercius is known mainly through one strong ancient witness rather than through a polished story, and that old epigraphic core is both real and carefully handled.

Brief life
Abercius is known less through a polished biography than through an ancient inscription, and that is exactly what makes his page so valuable. From his famous epitaph and the scholarship around it comes the outline of a second-century bishop who traveled widely, reached Rome, recognized fellow Christians across the empire, and left behind a symbolic Christian witness full of baptismal and Eucharistic meaning.
That strong epigraphic core has to be carefully distinguished from the later ingenious life built upon it, which is treated as fictitious. So the life becomes less a narrative saint's story than a lesson in early Christian memory: one old, solid witness can tell us a great deal if we refuse to bury it under later invention.
Historical note
The ancient epitaph is the strong historical center here, while the later full-scale life is treated as largely fictitious.
