Lives Of The Saints

St Agnes of Montepulciano
Agnes of Montepulciano stands as virgin, prioress, and woman of prayerful authority. Her life joins penance, mystical devotion, and steady government of religious houses.

Saint Agnes, Alonso Cano, c. 1624-1638
Brief life
Agnes of Montepulciano is one of those Dominican women whose contemplative life never drifts away from practical responsibility. Marked early by devotion and austerity, she entered religion young and was given authority while still youthful enough that the burden itself became part of her sanctification. The life is careful not to make her only a sweet mystic. She governs, founds, bears difficulties, and keeps recollection while carrying real community burdens.
The extraordinary favors and miracles remembered around her do not form the center; penance, obedience, charity, and love of God do. That balance helps explain why St Catherine of Siena later loved her memory so deeply. Agnes is a woman whose holiness was both hidden and fruitful, mystical and governing at once.
