St. Anselm of Canterbury

Anselm is one of the medieval Church's great minds, yet he never becomes a scholar floating above real life. Formed at Bec, first as monk and then as abbot, he learned theology in the atmosphere that suited him best: prayer, study, friendship, and ordered religious life. That contemplative foundation matters because his later conflicts in Canterbury would have been unbearable without it.

Once made archbishop, he found himself resisting kings, enduring exile, and defending the freedom of the Church in matters where compromise would have purchased outward peace at too high a cost. The writings remain great, but the man behind them is just as memorable: gentle, deeply devout, patient under suffering, and firm when principle required firmness. He endures as a thinker whose thought rose directly from holiness.
