St Apollinaris of Valence
St Apollinaris of Valence is remembered as a steady bishop in troubled times. He governed under pressure, endured exile, and kept pastoral courage in a church shaken by disorder and heresy.

Brief life
Apollinaris of Valence belongs to the line of strong Gallo-Roman bishops who had to hold the Church together under political pressure, doctrinal strain, and plain disorder. Formed in a saintly family and linked closely with his brother St Avitus of Vienne, he appears above all as a pastor who kept his balance. He governed a damaged diocese, resisted corrupt influence, and endured exile rather than surrender episcopal integrity.
The later miracles attached to his final journey and death are not the firmest part of the tradition, but the central life does not need them. What remains clear is a bishop who stayed constant in an unsettled age and carried pastoral responsibility without spectacle.
Historical note
For October 5, this page uses St Apollinaris because he gives the date a firmer historical life than some of the more doubtful or legendary alternatives.
