Lives Of The Saints
October 4
St Francis of Assisi
St Francis of Assisi is remembered as far more than a charming nature-saint. He was joyful, bold, poor, practical, and fiercely evangelical, and his whole life was ordered toward Christ, fraternity, and freedom from possession.

Brief life
Francis of Assisi is remembered not merely as a gentle lover of birds and fields, but as one of the most searching evangelic figures in Christian history. He broke with comfort, family expectation, and worldly ambition in order to belong wholly to Christ. The embrace of lepers, the repair of ruined churches, the gathering of the Friars Minor, and the long struggle to preserve their spirit of poverty all belong to the same conversion. Francis was joyful, tender, and strangely free, yet he was also severe with himself and relentless in resisting possession, privilege, and self-importance.
His preaching, missions, care for the poor, and love for Christ crucified gave his life its radiance. What makes his witness endure is that his joy was not softness. It was the brightness of a man who had stripped life down to God, fraternity, poverty, and praise.
Historical note
This life does not reduce St Francis to charming anecdotes: he is a radical lover of poverty, a founder under pressure, and a man deeply marked by Christ’s Passion.
