St. Austremonius of Auvergne
Austremonius is remembered for preaching the Christian faith in Auvergne. Butler cites Gregory of Tours and records the later veneration of his relics at Issoire and Mauzac.
The reading
ⓘ Butler source
Alban Butler, The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints, Volume XI (November), Thomas Richardson and Son, Derby, for the Catholic Book Society, 1846; November 1, “St Austremonius,” p. 39.
Austremonius is remembered among the early missionaries of Auvergne. Butler places his preaching in the third century and describes him as a confessor. His brief notice cites St. Gregory of Tours as an earlier witness.
The account also traces the remembrance of the saint through the churches that preserved his relics. It names the abbey bearing his name at Issoire and the abbey of Mauzac near Riom among the principal places associated with that veneration.
Butler observes that his name was well known in France by the eighth century and appears in the Roman Martyrology. The short notice preserves the connection between the preaching of the Gospel in Auvergne and the continuing honour paid to the missionary in its religious houses.
Historical note
An original Novena Regina reading adapted and summarized from the cited pre-1962 sources. This is not a transcription of Butler’s words.
This adaptation follows Butler’s identification as a confessor and does not add a later martyrdom story or a precise death year.
