Lives Of The Saints
December 1
St Eligius
Eligius is a saint who proves that practical competence and real holiness do not have to be enemies. He could work in a court, handle wealth, and deal with public affairs without losing simplicity or compassion.

Brief life
Eligius first stands out as a craftsman of extraordinary honesty. A gifted goldsmith, he so handled royal commissions that he became trusted at court not merely for skill but for scrupulous integrity, generosity to the poor, and a readiness to ransom captives and relieve distress with the wealth that passed through his hands.
He founded monasteries, served kings without becoming worldly, and at last was made bishop of Noyon and Tournai, where the same exactness of conscience turned into missionary and pastoral labor among still-pagan peoples in Flanders and the Low Countries. Butler's Eligius is practical from beginning to end: he is holy in money matters, holy in administration, holy in charity, and holy in preaching.
