Virgin and Martyr
Eulalia was a young martyr of Mérida whose memory was celebrated by Prudentius. Butler records her courage in refusing pagan sacrifice and her later veneration at Oviedo.
The reading
ⓘ Butler source
Alban Butler, The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints, Volume XII (December), Thomas Richardson and Son, Derby, for the Catholic Book Society, 1846; December 10, “St Eulalia, Virgin and Martyr,” pp. 229-237.
Eulalia was a young Christian of Mérida in Spain. Butler follows the poet Prudentius in recounting her determination to confess Christ during the persecution. Her mother tried to keep her away from danger, but she returned to the city and appeared before the authorities.
Neither promises nor threats persuaded her to offer sacrifice. The account describes her suffering under torture and death amid smoke and flame. Butler retains the older poet’s remembrance of her courage, while also observing that her youthful actions before the magistrate should not all be proposed for imitation.
The martyr’s tomb became a place of devotion, celebrated in Prudentius’s poem. Butler records the later veneration of her relics at Oviedo, where she was honoured as patroness. His concluding note distinguishes this Eulalia from the martyr of the same name honoured at Barcelona. This reading preserves that distinction and presents the reported wonders as part of the older narrative.
Historical note
An original Novena Regina reading adapted and summarized from the cited pre-1962 source. This is not a transcription of Butler’s words.
This is Eulalia of Mérida, distinct from Eulalia of Barcelona. The long biographical footnote on Prudentius is not part of the martyr’s biography.
