The reading

ⓘ Butler source

Alban Butler, The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints, Volume XII (December), Thomas Richardson and Son, Derby, for the Catholic Book Society, 1846; December 18, “Saint Gatian, First Bishop of Tours, Confessor,” pp. 313-314.

Gatian is honoured as the first bishop of Tours. Butler places his arrival in Gaul among the early missions from Rome and follows St. Gregory of Tours among the witnesses to his ministry. The exact chronology of those beginnings is not required to preserve the memory of the city’s first pastor.

The notice describes a small Christian community gathered amid hostility. Gatian continued to preach despite threats and celebrated the sacred mysteries with his people in places of shelter. His perseverance allowed the community to grow through a long ministry.

Butler records that he died in peace after years of labour and that his memory was honoured in the Church’s calendars. The reading retains the central witness of patient missionary service without assigning a precise year of arrival or repeating every traditional detail as a settled historical conclusion.

Historical note

An original Novena Regina reading adapted and summarized from the cited pre-1962 source. This is not a transcription of Butler’s words.

The approximate mission chronology in the older notice is left unasserted. This is Gatian of Tours.
