The reading

ⓘ Butler source

Alban Butler, The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints, Volume XI (November), Thomas Richardson and Son, Derby, for the Catholic Book Society, 1846; November 20, “St Humbert, Bishop of the East Angles, Martyr,” p. 425.

Humbert is remembered as a bishop of the East Angles. Butler associates him closely with St. Edmund and records that he crowned the king on Christmas Day in 855.

The same brief notice says that Humbert was killed by the Danes at about the time of Edmund’s martyrdom. It does not supply a separate account of his trial or the manner of his death.

Butler records that earlier English Christians honoured him among the martyrs on the same day as Edmund, November 20. This modest notice preserves the bishop’s place beside the king without adding a fuller biography that the cited passage does not provide.

Historical note

An original Novena Regina reading adapted and summarized from the cited pre-1962 sources. This is not a transcription of Butler’s words.

Butler supplies only a brief notice. It places Humbert’s death about the same time as Edmund’s; it does not establish that they died together in the same place or manner.
