Brief life

James, son of Zebedee and brother of John, first appears beside the Sea of Galilee, where Christ called him away from nets, boat, and father. The Gospels never hide the force of his temperament. James and John are named Boanerges, "sons of thunder"; they want fire called down from heaven; they still dream of places of honor when the kingdom is spoken of. Yet that very intensity is what makes his life compelling. Christ does not cast the ardent man aside. He trains him.

James is drawn into the innermost circle at Jairus’s house, on Tabor, and in Gethsemani. He learns that greatness lies not in privilege but in drinking the Master’s cup. Acts gives the end with austere brevity: Herod Agrippa killed James with the sword, making him the first of the apostles to die for Christ. Later Spanish traditions and the glory of Compostela belong to a later and deeply loved history of devotion, but the secure core needs no embellishment. James is memorable enough as the apostle whose zeal had to be purified, whose nearness to Jesus was real, and whose witness was sealed early in blood.

Historical note

This life treats the New Testament witness about St James as firm, while handling the later Spanish preaching and Compostela relic traditions with caution.
