Lives Of The Saints
November 24
St John of the Cross
John is hard on himself, gentle to others, and wholly given to God. He is not presented as a dreamy mystic detached from conflict.

Saint John of the Cross, Diego de Sanabria
Brief life
John of the Cross is a saint in whom hard suffering and great beauty belong together. He is the Carmelite reformer and mystical doctor who works closely with St Teresa, suffers imprisonment and humiliation for the reform, and yet gives the Church some of her deepest writing on the soul's union with God. This life stresses both sides at once: severe renunciation and the freedom, beauty, and fullness of divine love that animate his doctrine and poetry.
John is not a dreamy mystic detached from history. He reforms, suffers, is opposed, falls ill, and dies under strain. Out of that crucible comes teaching about the dark night and divine union that feels tested rather than abstract.
Historical note
This life uses St John of the Cross because Butler gives him a far stronger and more substantial life than the thinner legendary notices also found on the date.
