St. Lucian of Antioch

Lucian of Antioch belongs to that early generation of churchmen in whom learning and martyrdom met. He was a priest of Antioch, highly trained in rhetoric and Scripture, and remembered for careful work on the biblical text at a time when manuscripts still needed patient correction. Parts of his earlier career remain difficult to reconstruct neatly, especially his exact relations with some church leaders before the persecution. But the end of his life is clear. During the great persecution he was imprisoned, carried to Nicomedia, starved, interrogated, and pressed again and again to yield.

His answer was simple: he was a Christian. That plain confession, maintained through years of hardship, gives the whole life its force. Whatever uncertainty remains around some earlier details, his martyrdom and cult stand firmly. He is remembered not only as a scholar, but as a witness who suffered faithfully for the truth he had studied.
