St Nicholas of Myra

Nicholas is one of the best loved saints in the Christian world, and almost every generation has added fresh warmth to his memory. Yet the secure historical core is small. He was a fourth-century bishop of Myra, and his cult spread through East and West with extraordinary force. Around that firm center gathered the stories that shaped Christian imagination: the secret dowries slipped to save three daughters from ruin, the rescue of innocent men from execution, the deliverance of imperial officers, aid to sailors in danger, and sufferings borne during persecution. Those stories cannot all be handled as equally demonstrated history, but they are not worthless because of that.

They show what Christians believed this bishop to have been: generous without display, quick to protect the vulnerable, bold against injustice, and close to those in danger. That helps explain why devotion to Nicholas became so immense. Honesty about the evidence does not make him smaller. It simply lets the saint stand where he most securely stands: a real bishop, a very ancient object of love, and the center of a body of legend that preserved the moral shape of his holiness even when historical detail became hard to recover.
