The reading

ⓘ Butler source

Alban Butler, The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints, Volume VIII, R. Coyne, Dublin, 1833; August 30, “St. Pammachius, C.,” p. 380.

Pammachius was a Roman senator and a friend of St. Jerome from their years of study. He married Paulina, a daughter of St. Paula. His friendship with Jerome continued through their adult lives in correspondence, advice and concern for the Church’s teaching.

After Paulina’s death, Pammachius honoured her memory through prayer and almsgiving. Butler describes a meal offered to the poor of Rome and his care for people who were sick or in need. He also founded a hospital for strangers at the Roman port, serving its guests with his own hands.

His learning and public standing remained joined to humility and charity. Butler explicitly cautions against the supposition that he entered holy orders: the account remembers a layman who devoted his later life to God through service. He died in 410 and is commemorated on August 30. His life offers a witness of Christian generosity within public office, marriage and widowhood.
