Brief life

Peter of Alexandria had to lead the Church in Egypt at one of its worst moments. The Diocletian persecution was breaking over Christians from outside, while division and schism were rising from within. As bishop he encouraged confessors and martyrs, guided the faithful through fear and suffering, and issued important canons to help reconcile those who had lapsed under pressure. At the same time he had to resist the Meletian schism and preserve discipline without becoming merely harsh. That double burden gives the life its force. Peter was not only a confessor under persecution, but a shepherd trying to keep a wounded church from tearing itself apart.

His importance as bishop and martyr stands firm even though some later prison legends are less secure. The end is abrupt and severe: he was seized unexpectedly and executed without trial. Later memory honored him as the final public martyr of Alexandria in that persecution. This life is compelling because almost nothing in it depends on embellishment. Peter is a learned, steady bishop who kept serving under pressure until he was killed.

Historical note

This life treats the later prison-wall escape story as part of an unauthoritative Greek passion, but it is firm about Peter’s importance as a real bishop, confessor, and martyr.
