The reading

ⓘ Butler source

Alban Butler, The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints, Volume XII (December), Thomas Richardson and Son, Derby, for the Catholic Book Society, 1846; December 6, “St Peter Paschal, Bishop and Martyr,” pp. 129-131.

Butler’s account of Peter Paschal connects him with Valencia, religious formation and the work of redeeming Christian captives. It presents a pastor whose service extended beyond the security of his own community to people living in captivity and distress.

As bishop of Jaén, Peter continued that ministry in the region of Granada. The notice describes his instruction and encouragement of Christians there, together with the opposition that led to his imprisonment. Even confinement did not end the work of teaching and prayer associated with him.

The traditional narrative relates that he wrote in defence of the Christian faith while in prison and was killed after celebrating Mass. Butler commemorates him on December 6 and also notes an October observance. This reading follows the source’s central account of captivity and martyrdom while leaving its elaborate early biography and detailed chronology unasserted.

An original Novena Regina reading adapted and summarized from the cited pre-1962 source. This is not a transcription of Butler’s words.

The reading follows Butler’s traditional account. It does not adopt the full family narrative, educational chronology or every office attributed to him in the notice.
