Lives Of The Saints

The Dedication of the Basilica of St Michael

Michaelmas is a feast of scripture and worship rather than a saint’s biography. It honors St Michael and the holy angels with gratitude, while keeping their whole meaning ordered toward God’s providence and glory.

Brief life

Michaelmas is not a biography but a feast of the Church's worship. It honors St Michael and, with him, the holy angels who serve God, defend His people, and join in the worship of heaven. The Western observance is commonly linked with the dedication of a basilica of St Michael on the Salarian Way near Rome, but the feast has always meant more than the memory of one church building. It draws Christians back to the scriptural world in which Michael stands forth as a heavenly champion and reminds them that God's providence includes unseen help as well as visible sacraments, pastors, and institutions.

This life works because it stays theological and sober. The angels are honored warmly, but never treated as independent powers or vague folklore. All their glory points back to God.

Historical note

Because this is a feast treatment rather than a normal life, this account keeps the main line: St Michael in scripture and tradition, the Roman basilica dedication, and the Church’s reverence for all the holy angels.
