ⓘ Butler source
Alban Butler, The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints, Volume XII (December), Thomas Richardson and Son, Derby, for the Catholic Book Society, 1846; December 13, “B. John Marinoni,” pp. 275-276.
John Marinoni was born at Venice and first served the Church there as a priest. Butler records his work at the hospital for the incurable and his later position as a canon of St. Mark’s. Care for the sick and a life of prayer preceded his entrance into the Theatines.
He made his religious profession under the founders Cajetan and Gian Pietro Carafa. When Cajetan went to establish the community at Naples, Marinoni accompanied him. He preached, heard confessions and was repeatedly entrusted with the office of superior, working to preserve the spirit of the institute.
He died at Naples on December 13, 1562. Butler records his beatification by Clement XIII and the later permission for the Theatines to celebrate an office in his honour. He is therefore presented here as Blessed John Marinoni, with the title used by the cited pre-1962 source.
Historical note
An original Novena Regina reading adapted and summarized from the cited pre-1962 source. This is not a transcription of Butler’s words.
Marinoni is presented as Blessed, the rank identified in this edition. The date of his religious profession is not taken from the OCR’s misread numeral.
