The reading
ⓘ Butler source
Alban Butler, The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints, Volume XII (December), Thomas Richardson and Son, Derby, for the Catholic Book Society, 1846; December 13, “St Aubert, Bishop of Cambray and Arras, Confessor,” pp. 270-275.
Aubert served as bishop of Cambrai and Arras in the seventh century. Butler presents him as a learned pastor whose love of prayer accompanied an open door to people of every condition. The poor, the sick and those in distress found both practical help and spiritual counsel with him.
The formation of clergy was a particular concern. He sought ministers whose learning was joined to a disciplined Christian life. His ministry also touched the religious foundations associated with Landelin, Ghislain, Vincent Madelgarius, Waldetrude and Aldegundis, connecting the bishop’s care with the growing communities of the region.
Butler recounts the later honour paid to Aubert’s relics and discusses the written witnesses to his life. His memory belongs to both the pastoral history of the two cities and the religious houses that grew around them. This is Aubert of Cambrai, distinct from the bishop of Avranches associated with Mont-Saint-Michel.
