St. Cecilia

The beloved traditional story of Cecilia — with Valerian, Tiburtius, music, courage, conversions, and martyrdom — carries real devotional power and need not be set aside lightly. Yet the late acts cannot be trusted as real history. Beyond Cecilia's ancient cult, honorable burial, and connection with the Roman church that bears her name, very little can be said with certainty.

That double movement shapes the whole account. Cecilia remains one of the most loved virgin martyrs of the Church, but the beautiful later legend is not confused with firm early evidence. The devotion is preserved while the pretense of certainty is refused.
