Brief life

Charles Borromeo is one of the Church's great working saints, a man in whom prayer, austerity, administration, and pastoral courage rise together. From the Roman court and the closing phase of the Council of Trent he moved into the immense labor of Milan, where seminaries, synods, visitation, reform of clergy, and care for the poor all demanded relentless attention. What gives this life its force is that large-scale organization is never separated from sanctity.

Charles's administrative strength mattered because it was joined to personal austerity, prayer, and fearless charity. Opposition could be violent, plague and famine overwhelming, yet he kept building and correcting without ceasing to be a pastor.

Historical note

This life is especially strong for showing how deep prayer, personal austerity, and large-scale church reform held together in one life.
