The reading
ⓘ Butler source
Alban Butler, The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints, Volume XI (November), Thomas Richardson and Son, Derby, for the Catholic Book Society, 1846; November 13, “St Chillen, or Killian, Priest,” p. 301.
Chillen, also called Killian, was an Irish priest whom Butler describes as a near kinsman of St. Fiaker. Returning from a pilgrimage to Rome, he visited Fiaker in his solitude in Brie and remained with him for a time in prayer and religious conversation.
St. Faro, bishop of Meaux, later sent him to preach the Gospel in Artois. Butler’s short notice remembers the holiness and fruitfulness of that mission and places the close of his life in the seventh century.
The notice stands at the end of the November 13 entries, before the heading for November 14. This priest in Artois is distinct from Kilian, the bishop and martyr of Würzburg. The reading does not transfer that other saint’s companions or martyrdom to him.
Historical note
An original Novena Regina reading adapted and summarized from the cited pre-1962 sources. This is not a transcription of Butler’s words.
The November 13 placement follows the entry before Butler’s November 14 heading, despite the running header on the shared page. This is Chillen or Killian of Artois, distinct from the bishop and martyr Kilian of Würzburg.
