Daniel belongs to the early history of the Church in Wales. Butler remembers the veneration paid to him by the British churches and records his foundation of a college or monastery near the water separating Anglesey from the mainland.

The place became Bangor. According to the notice, St. Dubricius ordained Daniel as its first bishop, and Daniel was present at the synod of Brevi. The community and its worship form the setting of his episcopal life.

Butler records his burial on Bardsey and the dedication of Bangor’s cathedral in his name. The notice concerns the Welsh bishop, distinct from Daniel the Stylite and other saints who bear the same name.

Historical note

An original Novena Regina reading adapted and summarized from the cited pre-1962 sources. This is not a transcription of Butler’s words.

The foundation and episcopal chronology follow the older Welsh account in Butler. This Daniel of Bangor in Wales is distinct from Daniel the Stylite.
