The reading

ⓘ Butler source

Alban Butler, The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints, Volume XII (December), Thomas Richardson and Son, Derby, for the Catholic Book Society, 1846; December 23, “St Victoria, Virgin and Martyr,” pp. 357-358.

Victoria was a young Roman Christian remembered for her dedication to Christ. Butler’s brief notice follows traditional acts summarized by Aldhelm and Ado. It relates that a man who sought her in marriage denounced her when she would not consent.

The account joins the pressure to marry with demands that she offer sacrifice to the pagan gods. Neither demand obtained her agreement. She was killed after these attempts failed, and the Church remembered her as a virgin and martyr.

Victoria is honoured as a virgin and martyr on December 23, the date under which Butler prints her notice. The brief account belongs to the older tradition recorded in the acts and their summaries. Its remembrance centres on her Christian confession and perseverance under pressure.

Historical note

An original Novena Regina reading adapted and summarized from the cited pre-1962 source. This is not a transcription of Butler’s words.

The account is presented as the tradition recorded by Butler from the cited acts. Its detailed chronology is not independently established here.
