The reading
ⓘ Butler source
Alban Butler, The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints, Volume XI (November), Thomas Richardson and Son, Derby, for the Catholic Book Society, 1846; November 3, “St Papoul or Papulus, Priest and Martyr,” p. 99.
Papoul, also called Papulus, is remembered as a priest who preached the Christian faith in southern Gaul. Butler follows the account that associates him with St. Saturninus of Toulouse and places his martyrdom in Lauragais.
His memory remained attached to the place of his suffering. A church and abbey bearing his name grew there, and Butler records the later enlargement of that foundation. Its history continued through the medieval centuries.
In 1317 the former abbey became the seat of a bishopric under Pope John XXII. The town itself bore Papoul’s name. Butler’s concise notice joins the traditional missionary account to this enduring local remembrance, without supplying a detailed trial narrative.
Historical note
An original Novena Regina reading adapted and summarized from the cited pre-1962 sources. This is not a transcription of Butler’s words.
The association with Saturninus and the early chronology follow the traditional account cited by Butler. The reading does not independently settle those details.
