What patronage is associated with St. Rumwald?

St. Rumwald is traditionally honored as a patron of Brackley and Buckingham.

Butler’s 1846 heading expressly names Rumwald patron of these two towns. This is historical local patronage, separate from disputed details of his early life.

Rumwald is remembered as a child who died very young. Butler’s notice names the bishop Widerin in connection with his baptism and the priest Eadwold as his godfather. It records November 3 as the day of his death.

He was first buried at Sutthun. The notice then follows the translation of his remains to Brackley and later to Buckingham. His shrine at Buckingham became a place of devotion.

Butler expressly names him patron of Brackley and Buckingham. He also records an August 28 observance at Brackley, which he regards as probably connected with the translation of the relics. The dates of remembrance are kept distinct, and no precise year is assigned to the child’s brief life.

Historical note

An original Novena Regina reading adapted and summarized from the cited pre-1962 sources. This is not a transcription of Butler’s words.

The early-life details follow the short traditional notice. August 28 is identified by Butler as probably a relic-translation observance, distinct from the November 3 commemoration.
